Niobium and its alloys are used for chemical process technology, for elec- tronics as a component of superconductors or capacitors and for nuclear technology as reactor components. Electrochemically produced Niobium- Oxide layers generate Newton’s rings. Due to this fact, pure Niobium is also used for jewelry and coin metal.Nb-Zr alloy is the most widely used niobium alloy, is a kind of low strength niobium alloy, processing and welding performance is good, mainly used in aerospace, nuclear reactors, new electric light source sodium lamp and other applications.

Significant Characteristics

  • Excellent corrosion resistance in concentrated acids and liquid alkaline metals
  • Very ductile and therefore very good chipless forming
  • Good heat resistance and high melting point
  • Under 9.26 K superconductive
  • Low neutron capture cross section

NbZr1 is an alloy with approx. 0.8 – 1.0 % Zirconium and has a higher strength and hardness compared with pure Niobium. NbZr1 is used for higher requirements regarding mechanical characteristics. Our Niobium-1% zirconium sheets and plates are with a strict inspection for dimensions and surface finish. Please contact us for more details.

Application of Niobium-Zirconium alloys

Niobium-Zirconium alloys (Nb-1Zr) and PWC-11 alloys (Nb-1Zr-0.1C) have been used in the SP-100 design as basic materials for lithium coolant boundaries, reactor shells and parts inside fuel casings. Nb-1Zr alloy has 50% higher yield strength than pure Niobium and has the same corrosion resistance as pure Niobium in many solutions. Zirconium alloys which contains Niobium are used in heavy-water cooling of reactor pressure piping and reactor casings.

High pressure sodium lamp is a new type of light source in the early 1960s. It saves 80% of the electricity than incandescent lamp. It has high luminous efficiency and long service life (3000-5000h).

Niobium zirconium alloy is an alloy composed of metal zirconium added to metal niobium. The most important niobium zirconium alloy is Nb-Zr alloy.Adding zirconium to niobium can improve the strength of the alloy without affecting the plasticity and machining properties of the alloy.Nb-Zr alloy is the most widely used niobium alloy, is a kind of low strength niobium alloy, processing and welding performance is good, mainly used in aerospace, nuclear reactors, new electric light source sodium lamp and other applications.
