What is nitinol and SMA?
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are alloys with “memory”: They can return to their original shape after being deformed via a change in pressure or temperature. SMAs are used in a wide variety of applications – including metallurgy, manufacturing, biomedicine, and children’s arts and crafts – and their uses are always expanding…A shape memory alloy is a material that undergoes a phase transformation when it experiences a mechanical stress or temperature change. When the conditions return to normal, the SMA “remembers” its original shape and reverts to it.

- Resistivity:It has a resistivity of 82 ohm-cm in higher temperatures and 76 ohm-cm in lower temperatures.
- Thermal Conductivity:The thermal conductivity of this metal is 0.1 W/ cm-°C.
- Heat Capacity:Its heat capacity is 0.077 cal/ gm-°C.
- Latent Heat: this material has a latent heat of 5.78 cal/ gm.
- Susceptibility:Its Magnetic magnetic susceptibility is 3.8 emu- gm in high temperatures and 2.5 in low temperatures

How Does Nitinol Work?
Nitinol Shape Memory Alloys undergo a phase transformation in their crystal structure when cooled from the stronger, high temperature from (Austenite) to the weaker, low temperature from (Martensite). This inherent phase transformation is the basis for the unique properties of these alloys – in particular, Shape Memory and Superelasticity.

Medical grade nitinol material comprises nickel and titanium in nearly equal atomic weight percentages; per ASTM F2063, a nickel content of 54.5-57 wt% is specified for use in surgical implants. Nitinol with different compositions and phase transformation temperature can be used for other applications.
